The United Nations has issued a sharp warning regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s rhetoric on migrants, saying that portraying them as criminals or societal burdens could increase racial discrimination and even trigger hate crimes. The caution comes from the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which monitors adherence to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, a treaty ratified by the United States in 1994.
