The U.K.’s center-left Labour Party achieved a significant victory in Thursday’s general election, dealing a major blow to the ruling Conservative Party after their 14-year tenure, according to an official exit poll.
The Scottish National Party is expected to suffer heavy losses in Westminster after a decade of dominating politics in Scotland, as an exit poll indicates they may only have 10 MPs.
Former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon stated that if the survey’s predictions are accurate, it would be a “seismic” night for Labour. She believes that the exit poll results will be mostly accurate.
The SNP had anticipated a challenging night, with first minister John Swinney warning that the votes in many constituencies were evenly balanced. Although they were hoping for around 20 seats, the projected 10 would be their worst result since 2010, prior to the independence referendum.
On the other hand, Labour is anticipating a significant recovery from their 2019 performance, which was their worst in Scotland since 2010, when they only secured one MP.
Pre-election polls had suggested that Labour could win between 25 and 26 seats, particularly in the central belt of Edinburgh, Glasgow, and their surrounding areas.
