Colombo, December 23, 2024 (Daily Mirror)—The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) is poised to welcome its first overhauled and upgraded Kfir multirole combat aircraft by early 2025. This marks a significant milestone in the $50 million modernization agreement signed with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in 2021.
The project involves upgrading five Kfir fighter jets from SLAF’s No. 10 Squadron with state-of-the-art 4+ generation avionics. The enhancements include cutting-edge radar, advanced sensors, modern communication systems, and upgraded helmets, all aimed at improving operational effectiveness. The program also focuses on transferring technical expertise to SLAF personnel, with much of the overhaul work being conducted locally at the Katunayake Air Base under Israeli supervision.
This initiative follows IAI’s successful modernization of Colombia’s Kfir fleet and seeks to elevate the SLAF’s aircraft to a 4.5-generation standard. While engines and critical components are sent to Israel for specialized work, the bulk of the upgrades are being handled in Sri Lanka. The program’s 15-year guarantee from IAI underscores its long-term value.
Strategic Importance and Broader Fleet Expansion
Air Force Commander Air Marshal Udeni Rajapaksa emphasized the necessity of maintaining a capable fleet of fighter jets. “It’s not about whether we need Kfirs; it’s about aligning priorities with the country’s economic realities,” he stated. “Our focus today is ensuring peace in the Indian Ocean region, and this upgrade is a critical part of that effort.”
The modernization program reflects a strategic commitment to enhancing serviceability rather than phasing out the jets. By mid-2025, all five upgraded Kfir jets are expected to rejoin the SLAF fleet, enhancing its combat readiness and regional security capabilities.
In addition to upgrading the Kfir fleet, the SLAF has recently expanded its aircraft inventory with two new Chinese-made Y12 transport planes, signaling a broader push for fleet modernization.
A Proven Partner in Modernization
IAI’s extensive experience in upgrading military and commercial aircraft adds significant credibility to the project. The company has a proven track record with esteemed clients, including the Israel Air Force, U.S. Air Force, and Boeing.
This collaboration reinforces Sri Lanka’s ability to maintain and operate advanced combat aircraft, ensuring the SLAF remains a robust and reliable force. As the upgraded Kfirs prepare to take flight, the SLAF looks forward to a new era of enhanced aerial capabilities, contributing to both national and regional security.
