Rewards App to Transform Green Travel in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire residents may soon be rewarded for choosing greener travel options, as the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) plans to launch an innovative rewards app. Designed to make walking, cycling, and using public transport more appealing, the app will offer users perks such as free coffee, discounted meals, and passes to local attractions.

The initiative, with a contract worth up to £450,000, aims to reshape travel habits across the region. WYCA envisions a 25% increase in journeys made on foot, by bike, or via public transport among app users, fostering healthier lifestyles while reducing car dependency.

The app will utilize journey-tracking technology to reward sustainable travel choices. Incentives will be localized to benefit West Yorkshire businesses and communities, providing rewards like hot drinks from local cafes, discounted meals at neighborhood eateries, and free or reduced-price passes to popular attractions. This approach is expected to encourage residents to embrace greener travel while stimulating local economic growth.

The project is funded by the City Region Sustainable Travel Settlement, a government initiative launched in 2022 to support environmentally friendly travel. By promoting sustainable transportation, the scheme aligns with broader efforts to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions.

Interested companies have until 17 January 2024 to bid for the development contract. The project will commence in March 2024 and continue until March 2027, providing ample time to make a lasting impact on travel habits in West Yorkshire.

This innovative app combines technology, sustainability, and community engagement to create a win-win scenario for residents, businesses, and the environment. It offers tangible incentives for eco-conscious choices, paving the way for a greener, healthier, and more connected future in West Yorkshire.
