Australia spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. The 28-year-old, who emerged as Australia’s leading wicket-taker in their 2-0 series victory, will now undergo an assessment to determine the legality of his action.
If found to be illegal, Kuhnemann will be suspended from bowling at the international level until he successfully modifies his action and clears a reassessment.
Cricket Australia (CA) acknowledged the report in a statement, expressing support for Kuhnemann throughout the process. “The Australian team was notified of the match officials’ referral following the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle and will support Matt through the process of clearing this matter,” the statement read.
CA also emphasized that this is the first time Kuhnemann’s action has been questioned in his eight-year professional career. The governing body will work closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and independent experts to ensure compliance with ICC regulations.
While awaiting the results of his assessment, Kuhnemann remains eligible to bowl in domestic cricket for Tasmania. However, he will not be permitted to bowl in international matches until his action is deemed legal.
