The chief executive of Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust (SASH), Angela Stevenson, has announced her retirement after a distinguished 37-year career in the National Health Service (NHS).
Ms. Stevenson, who took on the role of chief executive in December 2021, previously served as the trust’s chief operating officer from September 2015. Reflecting on her journey, she expressed pride in the trust’s achievements and gratitude for the opportunities she has had throughout her career.
“As someone who started as a student nurse in Glasgow in 1988 and worked my way up to chief executive, I feel incredibly fortunate,” she said. “It has been a long and fulfilling career, and I am grateful for the experiences and colleagues who have made it so rewarding.”
Ms. Stevenson will retire later this year, and the trust’s board has begun the process of selecting her successor.
Speaking about her decision, she added: “Serving as chief executive has been an immense honour, and I have had the privilege of working alongside so many talented and dedicated professionals. It was always my plan to take early retirement, and now, as I approach 55, I have decided to prioritise time with my partner.”
Anita Donley, chair of SASH, praised Ms. Stevenson’s leadership and commitment: “Angela’s hard work and steadfast dedication have made a lasting impact on both our patients and our team. On behalf of the board, our colleagues, the local community, and our partners across Surrey Heartlands and Sussex ICSs, I extend our deepest thanks and appreciation for her service.”
SASH was established in 1998 following a merger between the East Surrey Healthcare NHS Trust and Crawley Horsham NHS Trust. It currently operates Crawley, Horsham, Caterham Dene, and East Surrey hospitals.
