Ukraine-Russia-US Trilateral Talks Begin in Abu Dhabi

Diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war entered a new phase as representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States convened in Abu Dhabi for trilateral peace talks, marking the first high-level three-way discussions since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The two-day meeting, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, aims to explore pathways to a negotiated settlement after nearly four years of conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasised that the future of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine would be central to any discussions. “The issue of Donbas is key,” he said, noting that the talks would examine how to address territorial control while ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty is respected.

Russia has maintained that any agreement must include concessions from Ukraine over territories it claims, a position Kyiv rejects. U.S. officials have stressed that the goal is to keep dialogue open and explore solutions without compromising Ukraine’s sovereignty. White House representatives described the initial discussions as “productive,” focusing on establishing parameters for further negotiations.

The Abu Dhabi talks follow a series of diplomatic efforts earlier in the week, including meetings on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos and separate discussions between U.S. envoys and Russian officials in Moscow. Both Ukraine and the United States have emphasised the importance of continued engagement to prevent further escalation and reduce civilian suffering in conflict zones.

Although no breakthroughs have been announced, officials reported that the first round of talks included detailed discussions on security arrangements, humanitarian access, and the conditions under which both sides could consider de-escalation measures. Ukrainian officials expressed cautious optimism that ongoing dialogue could help narrow differences and create a foundation for future agreements.

Analysts note that while deep mistrust remains, the trilateral format offers a rare opportunity to bring Moscow and Kyiv into a shared negotiation space under U.S. mediation. Observers say that success will depend on the willingness of both sides to compromise on territorial and security issues, and on continued international support for Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The Abu Dhabi talks signal a renewed commitment to diplomacy and provide a critical forum for international engagement, even as the conflict continues to have devastating effects on the region’s civilians and stability.
