Rishi Sunak has faced another setback just before the general election as a new poll suggests that the Conservatives may suffer a worse defeat than in 1997. According to a survey by More in Common, the party is projected to win only 126 seats, while Labour is forecasted to secure 430 seats.
This is a significant decrease from the 365 seats the Tories won in 2019, and it could lead to Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Defense Secretary Grant Shapps being ousted. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, stated that Boris Johnson’s efforts for the Tories would not benefit them. Mr. Johnson cautioned against a potential Labor super-majority, describing it as “pregnant with horrors.” In response, Sir Keir Starmer dismissed Tory warnings, asserting that they amounted to “voter suppression.” Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride also expressed concern about the possibility of Labour achieving “the largest majority any party has ever achieved.” Additionally, another Tory minister, Andrew Griffith, stated that Labour might secure a majority “unprecedented in modern history.”
