BTS has turned its back on the Grammy spotlight. In a striking decision that has sent ripples through the global music industry, the K-pop superstars will not submit their highly anticipated comeback album Arirang for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards, stepping away from a prize they have pursued for years.
The decision marks a dramatic moment for one of the most influential groups in modern pop music. RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook have collectively transformed BTS from a South Korean boy band into a global cultural force, filling stadiums, dominating international charts and helping push K-pop into the heart of mainstream Western music.
Yet despite their enormous success, Grammy recognition has remained elusive. BTS has received multiple Grammy nominations over the years but has never taken home the coveted trophy. Their decision to sit out the 2027 competition means the group will not have another opportunity to change that record this time around.
The announcement came after the Recording Academy introduced a new Best Asian Pop Music Performance category for the 69th Grammy Awards. The new award is intended to recognize contemporary pop music from Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop. BTS did not explicitly say that the new category was the reason for its decision, but the timing has intensified debate over how Asian music is represented within the Grammys.
For BTS, the decision comes at an especially significant moment. Arirang represents the group’s major return as a full seven-member act following years of individual projects and mandatory military service in South Korea. The album’s arrival has been closely watched by fans worldwide, making its absence from the Grammy submission list all the more notable.
The Recording Academy has expressed disappointment over BTS choosing not to participate in the Grammy process this year. But the awards ceremony will move forward without one of the biggest names in global music competing for its highest honors.
BTS may be stepping away from the Grammy race, but the decision has ensured that the spotlight remains firmly on them — and on a bigger question about whether music’s most prestigious awards have fully caught up with the global transformation of pop music.
