Starmer Pushes for Closer UK‑EU Partnership Amid Global Uncertainty
Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Wednesday that the United Kingdom will seek a closer and more ambitious partnership with the European Union, citing growing global instability as the driving force behind the move. Speaking at a Downing Street press conference, Starmer said the UK must strengthen economic, defence, and security ties with Europe to protect national interests and navigate an increasingly dangerous world.
Starmer’s comments come amid heightened tensions with the United States, where President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised NATO and threatened to withdraw from the alliance. The prime minister emphasized that Britain will act independently in its national interest, reassuring citizens that it will not be drawn into conflicts abroad due to external pressure.
The UK leader acknowledged that Brexit had caused “deep damage” to the economy and said the upcoming summit with EU leaders this summer will be an opportunity to pursue cooperation beyond previous agreements. Starmer highlighted areas such as trade, energy, security, and youth mobility, suggesting a more proactive approach to engage with the single market where possible.
Starmer described the proposed partnership as a chance to safeguard security, strengthen the economy, and reduce the cost of living, emphasizing shared values and interests with European nations. While discussions with Brussels will require negotiation, he expressed optimism that a deeper, more strategic relationship could be achieved.
The planned summit is expected to take place in Brussels in June or July, and the UK government hopes to present a unified agenda that signals a shift in foreign policy towards Europe while maintaining careful diplomacy with the United States.
Analysts suggest Starmer’s push reflects a broader effort to assert the UK’s influence in Europe and address vulnerabilities exposed by global geopolitical tensions, marking a significant moment in British foreign policy.
