Passengers travelling through Glasgow and Edinburgh airports experienced flight delays over the weekend after a temporary disruption to jet fuel supplies affected some airline operations.

The issue, which emerged on Sunday, forced a number of flights departing from both airports to make additional stops for refuelling before continuing to their final destinations. Airport officials confirmed that the disruption was linked to short-term staffing shortages among fuel delivery drivers rather than any broader supply concerns.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports stressed that operations remained largely unaffected and that no flights were cancelled as a result of the fuel shortage.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Airport said efforts were quickly put in place to restore fuel stock levels through overnight deliveries.

“A short-term staffing issue has affected one of the fuel suppliers used by airlines at the airport, with work underway to return stock levels to normal,” the spokesperson said.

“There have been no related flight cancellations.”

Airport authorities also confirmed that the disruption was not connected to any wider geopolitical events or international fuel supply issues.

Despite delays affecting some passengers, officials said flights continued to reach their destinations, and the situation had been resolved by Monday following the arrival of additional fuel supplies.

Travellers have been advised to continue checking with their airlines for the latest flight information, although airports expect normal operations to continue without further disruption.

There are few places where history feels as close underfoot as the ancient pathways of Iona, a small island off Scotland’s west coast where wind, sea and spirituality meet in a landscape shaped by centuries of pilgrimage.

Among its most evocative routes is the so-called “Street of the Dead,” a narrow, timeworn path that once carried funeral processions across the island to the sacred burial ground at Reilig Òdhrain. Walking it today is less a simple hike and more a journey through layers of history, faith and memory.

The path begins near the island’s historic religious centre, the Iona Abbey, founded in the 6th century by St Columba, one of the most influential figures in early Christianity in Britain and Ireland. From there, the route stretches across low, grassy ground, flanked by weathered stone markers and ancient graves that hint at the island’s long spiritual significance.

Centuries ago, kings, chiefs and clan leaders from across Scotland were brought here to be buried in what was considered one of Christendom’s holiest sites. The Street of the Dead was not merely a route of passage but a final journey of honour and reverence, connecting the living community with its understanding of eternity.

Today, visitors walking the same path experience a striking sense of stillness. The sound of the Atlantic wind and distant seabirds replaces the solemn processions of the past, but the atmosphere of reflection remains. Moss-covered stones and carved crosses stand as silent witnesses to more than a thousand years of history.

Beyond its spiritual significance, Iona itself is a place of remarkable natural beauty. White sandy beaches, turquoise waters and rolling green landscapes create a peaceful contrast to its deep historical roots. The island can be reached by ferry via Mull, making it an accessible yet remote destination for travellers seeking both nature and heritage.

For modern visitors, walking the Street of the Dead is less about destination and more about connection—linking present-day footsteps with those who once walked the same route in grief, ceremony and faith.

In a world of rapid travel and constant movement, Iona offers something rare: a path where time slows, and history is not just remembered but physically felt beneath every step.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has strengthened its long-haul capabilities with the arrival of its second Airbus A350-1000 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, marking a significant step in the carrier’s ongoing fleet modernization strategy.

The aircraft landed at 5:18 PM, following the delivery of PAL’s first A350-1000 in December 2025. The latest addition is part of the airline’s broader order for nine Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, designed to enhance its long-distance operations and improve overall passenger experience on intercontinental routes.

With this delivery, Philippine Airlines continues to position itself as a leader in advanced wide-body aircraft operations in the region. The airline remains the first and only carrier in Southeast Asia currently operating the Airbus A350-1000, one of the most modern long-range aircraft in commercial aviation.

The Airbus A350-1000 is engineered for ultra-long-haul travel, offering improved fuel efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and enhanced cabin comfort. The aircraft features advanced aerodynamics, quieter engines, and upgraded cabin pressure systems designed to reduce passenger fatigue on long international flights. These improvements are expected to support PAL’s expanding network, particularly its key routes connecting the Philippines with destinations in North America.

Philippine Airlines President Richard Nuttall said the new aircraft will play a crucial role in strengthening the airline’s long-haul operations as global travel demand continues to rise. He emphasized that the fleet expansion reflects PAL’s long-term commitment to modernization, operational efficiency, and elevated passenger service standards.

The arrival of the second A350-1000 comes at a time when PAL is showing strong operational performance following its recovery and restructuring phase in recent years. In 2025, global aviation analytics firm Cirium ranked Philippine Airlines as the most punctual airline in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting its improved reliability and service consistency.

Industry analysts view the fleet expansion as a strategic move to improve competitiveness on long-haul routes, where fuel efficiency, reliability, and passenger comfort are key factors in attracting international travelers. The A350-1000 is expected to play a central role in supporting PAL’s growth ambitions as it continues to rebuild and expand its global footprint.

With more A350-1000 aircraft set to be delivered in the coming years, Philippine Airlines is positioning itself for a stronger presence in the premium long-haul market, while reinforcing Manila’s role as a growing aviation hub in Southeast Asia.

As millions of travelers continue to crowd famous European hotspots like France, Spain, and Italy, a growing number of tourists are now turning their attention toward lesser-known destinations across Central and Eastern Europe. Among the countries gaining increasing international interest is North Macedonia, a scenic Balkan nation known for its dramatic mountains, ancient history, and rich culinary traditions.

Located just north of Greece, North Macedonia offers travelers breathtaking landscapes filled with green valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and snow-covered mountain peaks. One of the country’s most iconic attractions is Church of St. John at Kaneo, an Orthodox church perched above the shores of the stunning Lake Ohrid. The church, overlooking one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, has become a symbol of the country’s growing tourism appeal.

Travel experts say visitors are increasingly attracted to destinations that offer authentic culture, lower travel costs, and fewer crowds compared to Western Europe’s major tourist capitals. North Macedonia has benefited from this trend, drawing attention for its mix of natural beauty, historic architecture, and warm hospitality.

The country’s food culture has also become a major attraction. Traditional meals vary from region to region, with recipes influenced by Balkan, Mediterranean, and Ottoman traditions. Fresh vegetables, grilled meats, homemade cheeses, and locally produced wines are common highlights of the Macedonian dining experience. Thanks to the country’s sunny climate and fertile valleys, local produce is known for its rich flavor and quality.

Tourism officials in the region are promoting hiking, cultural tourism, wine tours, and lakeside vacations as alternatives to overcrowded European destinations. Popular spots include the historic city of Ohrid, ancient monasteries, mountain villages, and national parks that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.

At the same time, immigration experts are reporting a growing number of Americans exploring long-term relocation opportunities in countries across Central and Eastern Europe. Nations such as Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, Albania, and Estonia are seeing increased interest due to affordable living costs, slower-paced lifestyles, and expanding digital work opportunities.

Analysts say the shift reflects changing travel habits among international tourists who are now seeking deeper cultural experiences instead of traditional sightseeing tours. With its untouched scenery, historical treasures, and affordable travel options, North Macedonia is quickly emerging as one of Europe’s most promising hidden gems for modern travelers.

Travel activity in Maldives is experiencing a sharp mix of positive developments and growing concerns, as the country sees both new aviation links and a series of recent tourist accidents that have drawn international attention.

One of the biggest travel developments this week is the launch of a new direct flight route between Australia and the Maldives, significantly cutting journey times for long-haul travellers. The new non-stop service, operated in partnership with Maldivian carriers, reduces travel time from over 20 hours to around 11 hours, making the island nation more accessible for Australian tourists and luxury holidaymakers. Industry officials say the route is expected to strengthen tourism demand during the upcoming peak season and could pave the way for additional direct connections from other major cities.

Tourism authorities have welcomed the development, noting that improved connectivity remains a key priority as the Maldives continues to position itself as a premium global destination. The country has been targeting over 2.4 to 2.5 million tourist arrivals in 2026, reflecting strong recovery momentum in international travel demand.

However, the positive outlook is being overshadowed by a series of recent incidents involving foreign tourists. Authorities have reported multiple accidents in recent weeks, including diving-related tragedies and water sports incidents, raising concerns about safety standards in certain adventure tourism activities. In one of the most serious cases, several foreign divers lost their lives during a deep underwater cave excursion, prompting renewed scrutiny of diving regulations and operator compliance.

Officials say investigations are ongoing, and tourism operators are being urged to strengthen safety briefings, equipment checks and risk assessments, particularly for high-risk activities such as scuba diving and sea safaris. Emergency response capabilities are also under review as authorities seek to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite these challenges, tourism experts say the Maldives remains one of the world’s most sought-after destinations, driven by its luxury resorts, clear waters and strong global brand appeal. However, they caution that maintaining visitor confidence will depend heavily on balancing rapid tourism growth with improved safety oversight.

As the peak travel season approaches, the Maldives now faces a dual challenge: expanding accessibility and visitor numbers while ensuring that safety standards keep pace with rising demand.

Spain is often associated with bustling cities, packed beaches, and iconic landmarks, but beyond the well-trodden paths lies another side of the country that many travellers say feels more authentic, peaceful, and deeply rewarding. In a recent wave of reader recommendations, several hidden destinations across Spain have been praised for their tranquillity, natural beauty, and the rare feeling of having space all to yourself.

From remote mountain villages to untouched coastal stretches, these lesser-known locations offer a stark contrast to Spain’s busiest tourist hubs. Travellers describe arriving in places where life moves slowly, where local traditions remain intact, and where visitors are welcomed not as part of a crowd, but as guests in small, close-knit communities.

Many readers highlight rural inland regions, where rolling landscapes, olive groves, and historic stone villages create a timeless atmosphere. In these areas, it is common to walk for hours without encountering large groups of tourists, something increasingly rare in Europe’s more famous destinations. Locals often maintain traditional ways of life, including artisanal food production, seasonal festivals, and family-run hospitality that adds to the sense of authenticity.

Coastal hidden gems also feature prominently in reader experiences. Quiet coves, unspoiled beaches, and small fishing towns provide an alternative to Spain’s crowded Mediterranean resorts. Visitors describe crystal-clear waters, peaceful surroundings, and the ability to enjoy nature without noise or disruption. For many, these coastal escapes represent the essence of what travel used to feel like before mass tourism.

Nature lovers, in particular, are drawn to Spain’s protected parks and mountainous regions, where hiking trails, wildlife, and dramatic landscapes dominate the experience. In these areas, travellers often report encountering more wildlife than people, reinforcing the sense of isolation and calm that defines these hidden gems.

What connects all these recommendations is a shared appreciation for simplicity and authenticity. Readers frequently mention that the most memorable experiences come not from major attractions, but from quiet mornings in village squares, unexpected conversations with locals, and unplanned discoveries along rural roads.

As overtourism continues to shape travel trends across Europe, these lesser-known parts of Spain are gaining renewed interest from those seeking slower, more meaningful journeys. Yet many of these places remain blissfully under the radar, preserving the very qualities that make them so special.

For travellers willing to venture beyond Spain’s famous landmarks, these hidden gems offer something increasingly rare in modern tourism: space, silence, and a genuine connection to place.

One of the most popular choices for summer travel is the Himalayas, where destinations like Manali, Shimla, and Dharamshala offer crisp mountain air, snow-kissed peaks, and peaceful landscapes. These hill stations attract families, couples, and solo travelers seeking a break from scorching city temperatures.

For those who prefer tropical getaways, island destinations such as the Maldives remain a top choice. Crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and luxury resorts make it an ideal escape for relaxation and water activities like snorkeling and diving.

Cultural explorers often head to Europe during summer, with cities like Paris, Rome, and Zurich offering a mix of history, art, and vibrant street life. Long daylight hours and festive summer events make European travel especially appealing during this season.

Within India, coastal destinations like Goa and Kerala continue to attract travelers looking for beachside relaxation, backwater cruises, and rich local cuisine. These locations offer a perfect blend of leisure and cultural experiences.

Adventure seekers, on the other hand, are turning toward destinations like Ladakh, where rugged terrain, high-altitude passes, and breathtaking landscapes create an unforgettable experience for bikers and trekkers.

U.S. federal authorities have arrested a tourist following a shocking incident in Hawaii in which an endangered Hawaiian monk seal was reportedly struck on the head with a rock. The case has sparked widespread outrage among wildlife protection groups, local communities, and conservation officials who say the act represents a serious violation of federal environmental laws.

The arrest was carried out by agents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Hawaii after video footage circulated online showing the alleged attack. The footage reportedly captured an individual throwing a rock at the protected marine animal, an act that quickly drew condemnation and prompted an immediate investigation.

The Hawaiian monk seal, one of the rarest seal species in the world, is protected under both federal and state conservation laws. Wildlife experts say even minor disturbances can have serious consequences for the species, which already faces threats from habitat loss, climate change, and human interference.

Officials emphasized that harming or harassing endangered wildlife carries severe penalties, including heavy fines and potential imprisonment. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspect but confirmed that legal proceedings are underway.

Conservation groups across Hawaii have strongly condemned the incident, calling it a reminder of the importance of responsible tourism and respect for local ecosystems. Many have urged visitors to maintain safe distances from wildlife and to follow strict guidelines designed to protect vulnerable species.

Local residents also expressed anger and disappointment, noting that monk seals are a treasured part of Hawaii’s natural heritage. The incident has reignited discussions about increasing awareness among tourists and strengthening enforcement in protected coastal areas where seals are often spotted.

Authorities say they will continue to monitor wildlife protection zones closely and pursue strict action against any violations. The case is expected to proceed through federal court as officials stress that protecting endangered species remains a top environmental priority in Hawaii.

A serious incident involving a Turkish Airlines aircraft took place at Tribhuvan International Airport, after the plane experienced technical difficulties during landing, triggering an emergency response at the airport.

The aircraft, arriving from Istanbul, reportedly encountered a problem during its landing phase, leading to smoke and fire concerns near the landing gear area. Airport authorities immediately activated emergency protocols as the situation unfolded on the runway.

Fire and rescue teams rushed to the scene, quickly working to bring the situation under control. Passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft using emergency procedures. Despite the frightening moments, no immediate casualties were reported.

Witnesses at the airport described scenes of alarm as emergency vehicles surrounded the aircraft and passengers were guided away from the plane. Some travelers expressed shock but also relief at the swift action taken by the crew and rescue teams.

Flight operations at Tribhuvan International Airport were temporarily disrupted as authorities secured the runway and carried out safety inspections. Several incoming and outgoing flights were delayed while emergency crews cleared the area and assessed the aircraft.

Preliminary information suggests the issue may have been linked to a technical fault during landing, though officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause. Aviation investigators are expected to conduct a detailed examination of the aircraft to determine what went wrong.

Kathmandu’s airport, which operates in a geographically challenging environment surrounded by mountainous terrain, often requires heightened safety procedures during landing and takeoff operations.

The incident has raised renewed attention on aviation safety standards and emergency preparedness in the region. Authorities have stated that a full investigation will be carried out in coordination with Turkish Airlines and international aviation safety experts.

Despite the alarming situation, the successful evacuation of passengers has been praised as a strong example of coordinated emergency response between airline staff and Nepalese airport authorities.
